Development Intelligence Unit announces the Data for Policy fellowship

In the world of public policy, what if there were a way to bridge the gap and bring government and research together to meet the needs of the people who use state programs and services?

With the evolving data science landscape in India, the Development Intelligence Unit (DIU) set-up by the Transforming Rural India Foundation (TRIF) and Sambodhi Research and Communications Pvt. Ltd. announces a fellowship programme that will place early-career professionals, interested in improved public policy outcomes and building a career in data science, within public offices in India to work at the exciting intersection of data science and public policy.

Gaining hands-on experience to work with government departments, the fellows will have other perks too. It includes mentorship by leading sector experts like Alok Mishra (Additional Director General, Ministry of Commerce and Industry), Mittar Sain (Additional Director General, Ministry of Rural Development), Priya Nanda (Senior Program Officer, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation), Abhiroop Mukhopadhyay (Professor, Indian Statistical Institute), Dharmendra Chandurkar (Co-founder, Sambodhi), Swapnil Shekhar (Co-founder, Sambodhi).

Additional benefits include travel cost reimbursement, comprehensive health and accident insurance.

What does a fellow do?

As data fellows within the government system, fellows’ primary role will be to support the programme’s success by working towards its objectives with responsibilities that include;

  • The fellows will be active in conducting research and data analysis to support the programmes.
  • Support and inculcate a data-driven culture
  • Develop the use cases of data and data systems
  • Identify issues and gaps in the data systems, and plan to address these
  • Monitor implementation programmes using data
  • Undertake pilots or primary data collection

Eligibility criteria:

  • People with the right to work in India
  • Completion of a degree from a recognised university or institution on or before July 30, 2022
  • A degree in the social sciences, statistics, public policy, or rural management
  • 3+ years of experience outside of time spent as a full-time student
  • 2+ years of experience in government, non-profit, or private sector work in a socially impactful role
  • Comfort with and intermediate level user of a statistical software package, such as STATA, R, SPSS, and similar software.
  • Skilled in data visualisation
  • Proficiency in English and in an Indian regional language
  • Be born on or after October 01, 1992

Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an assignment that will test their analytical skills, data management, data visualisation, logical reasoning, language skills, and require them to respond to a case. Following this, successful candidates will be invited to a final interview and join the fellowship in January 2023.
