Kashmir is home to thousands of walnut farms producing lakhs of tonnes of fresh and organic walnuts annually. While agriculture sustains numerous families, the joy of harvesting turns tragic for walnut farmers in Kashmir.
The hazardous practice of thrashing walnuts has led to unfortunate accidents – fatalities, injuries, and disabilities. Over the past three years, more than thirty lives have been lost, and hundreds injured due to falls.
The root cause, experts assert, lies in outdated harvesting methods, a lack of protective gear, and limited awareness of safety protocols. In an era of technological advancements, the walnut farmers in Kashmir are urging for a comprehensive intervention from all stakeholders to ensure a risk-free harvest.
In response to the pressing issue, a renowned climber and rescuer from Kerala has stepped in to assist the beleaguered walnut growers. Through training sessions, demonstrations, and awareness camps in South Kashmir villages, he aims to empower the farming community and foster a safer harvesting environment.
